A Journey of Faith and Curiosity
Before I describe the route and means to reach the sacred Karauli Shankar Mahadev Dhaam, I feel compelled to share what drew me toward this journey in the first place.
One day, I stumbled upon a YouTube video that left me both intrigued and unsettled. It featured individuals who appeared to be in a disturbed mental state—speaking and behaving as though another entity had taken over them. These people were brought before Babaji, the spiritual head of the Dhaam. What happened next was astonishing: they began to speak in completely different voices and personalities, as if someone—or something—was communicating through them. After a spiritual session at the Dhaam, they were interviewed again, now completely healed and restored to their original selves.
This extraordinary phenomenon led me to question the nature of consciousness, healing, and the mysteries behind such spiritual transformations. That’s when I discovered the concept of Smriti Vigyaan—a discipline rooted in ancient Indian spiritual science, believed to deal with memory, subconscious imprints, and karmic energies. To explore this deeper, I decided to embark on a journey to Karauli Dhaam.
How to Reach Karauli Dhaam
Karauli Dhaam is named after Karauli village, situated approximately 17 km from Kanpur Central Railway Station in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh—a city with rich historical relevance, located on the banks of the holy river Ganga.
By Train
“Kanpur Central” is a major railway junction, well-connected to most parts of India.
If you’re traveling from “Hyderabad”, like I did, be aware that direct trains to Kanpur often get fully booked. Instead, consider traveling via Veerangana Jhansi Laxmibai Junction, which offers better availability and connectivity. Jhansi also holds historical significance and serves as a convenient transit point.
From Jhansi, you have two main options to reach Kanpur:
- Local Train: Regular services connect Jhansi to Kanpur. The journey takes about 4 hours.
- Bus: State-run buses are also available and take around 8 hours to reach Kanpur.
Within Kanpur
Once you arrive at Kanpur Central, proceed to Rama Devi Chauraha—a major and well-connected junction about 5 km from the station. You can easily reach it using auto-rickshaws or app-based cabs.
From Rama Devi to Karauli
- Shared autos/tempos frequently operate between Rama Devi and Karauli village.
- If shared options aren’t available, you can hire a private auto. It costs more but offers comfort and flexibility.
Travel Tip: Public transport to Karauli becomes sparse after 6 PM, so it’s best to travel in the morning or early afternoon.
By Flight
Kanpur Airport (Chakeri) is a domestic airport and also serves as an Indian Air Force base. It is located about 17 km from Kanpur city center and operates from a new civil terminal.
From the airport, Karauli Dhaam is approximately 18 km away by taxi, which takes around 40 minutes depending on traffic.
